Africa Rising Ignites Bulawayo as Festival of Song Zimbabwe Builds Momentum Toward Its Landmark 5th Edition
The city of Bulawayo recently witnessed an unforgettable celebration of African artistry and musical excellence as the Festival of Song Zimbabwe (FOS), in collaboration with the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Bulawayo, successfully hosted Africa Rising: A Voice for the New World at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe.
Held ahead of Africa Day commemorations, the concert delivered an emotionally charged and culturally rich experience that brought together music lovers, creatives, cultural stakeholders, and supporters of the arts for an afternoon dedicated to African identity, unity, and hope.
More importantly, the success of Africa Rising marks another major step in the continued evolution and expansion of the Festival of Song Zimbabwe as it now begins building momentum toward its highly anticipated 5th Edition.
A Concert Rooted in African Identity

From the opening moments of the production, Africa Rising established itself as a cultural statement.
The carefully curated production explored themes of: African resilience, Unity, Cultural pride, Spirituality, Hope for a new generation and The role of African voices in shaping the future
Through powerful choral harmonies and emotionally resonant performances, audiences were reminded of the unifying and transformative power of music.
Bulawayo Choristers Deliver a Defining Performance

At the heart of the production were the acclaimed Bulawayo Choristers, whose performance became one of the defining highlights of the evening.
The choir delivered a deeply moving repertoire characterized by rich African textures. Their performance reflected not only artistic maturity, but also the growing standard of Zimbabwean choral music on a national level.
Months of preparation and rehearsal culminated in a presentation that left audiences inspired and emotionally connected to the concert’s central message.
Acquillah K and Universal Melodies Elevate the Experience

Adding further energy and diversity to the production were guest performers Acquillah K and Universal Melodies.
Acquillah K brought contemporary African musical expression into the production, helping bridge modern artistry with the broader cultural and choral themes of the concert.
Universal Melodies also contributed strongly to the atmosphere of the afternoon, adding musical richness and collaborative depth to the event.
Together, the performers created a dynamic and immersive artistic experience that resonated strongly with attendees.
A Growing Cultural Partnership
The continued collaboration between Festival of Song Zimbabwe and Friends of the Gallery is steadily reshaping how cultural spaces can be activated in Zimbabwe.
By transforming the National Gallery into a live performance environment, the partnership demonstrates the growing potential of interdisciplinary arts programming that combines music, visual art, storytelling and public engagement. The collaboration also reflects a broader vision of positioning Bulawayo as a centre for premium cultural experiences capable of attracting national attention and future tourism interest.
Building Toward Festival of Song Zimbabwe 5th Edition

Perhaps the most significant outcome of Africa Rising is its role in strengthening the foundation for the upcoming Festival of Song Zimbabwe 5th Edition.
Over recent years, FOS has evolved from a choir competition into a broader cultural movement incorporating choral excellence, opera and classical music, African storytelling, creative collaborations and cultural diplomacy.
Productions such as:
- Carmen: A Journey Through the Faces of Love
- Africa Rising: A Voice for the New World
- and upcoming events like Ubuntu: The Sound of Humanity
are helping establish the artistic identity and institutional credibility necessary for the festival’s next phase of growth.
The 5th Edition is expected to expand national participation, strengthen corporate and institutional partnerships, enhance production quality and further position Festival of Song Zimbabwe as one of the country’s leading cultural platforms.
The Bigger Vision
At its core, Festival of Song Zimbabwe continues to champion a powerful idea: That Zimbabwean and African stories deserve world-class artistic presentation. Through music and cultural collaboration, FOS is contributing toward:
- preserving artistic heritage,
- empowering young creatives,
- strengthening community,
- and building a sustainable creative economy.
The success of Africa Rising confirms that the journey toward that vision is well underway.
As the voices of Bulawayo rose in harmony this May, they did more than perform music — they announced the continued rise of a cultural movement.
