CARMEN: A Journey Through the Faces of Love

An Operatic Valentine’s Experience at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe

This Valentine’s Day, the Festival of Song Zimbabwe (FOSZIM), in a joint venture with Friends of the Gallery (FOG), invites audiences to an elegant and emotionally charged operatic concert titled “CARMEN: A Journey Through the Faces of Love.” The event will take place on Saturday, 14 February, at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Harare, offering a refined cultural experience that blends music, storytelling, and romance.

Rather than presenting a full opera, this carefully curated concert features selected extracts from the opera Carmen, allowing audiences to experience the essence, drama, and emotional depth of the work in an accessible and engaging format.

Reimagining Carmen: Love in Its Many Forms

Carmen remains one of the most powerful operatic stories ever written—a tale of passion, freedom, obsession, and self-determination. In “Carmen: A Journey Through the Faces of Love,” these themes are explored through a sequence of operatic excerpts that highlight love in its many dimensions: romantic love, forbidden desire, self-love, sacrifice, and emotional conflict.

By focusing on extracts rather than a full staging, the production allows for deeper reflection on the emotional core of the music, inviting audiences to engage with the story’s intensity without the constraints of a traditional opera format.

Ruwa Chorale: Leading the Musical Journey

The evening is anchored by Ruwa Chorale, winners of the 2025 Festival of Song Community Category. Known for their expressive musicality and strong choral discipline, Ruwa Chorale brings a uniquely African sensitivity to operatic performance, blending classical vocal technique with emotional warmth and cultural nuance.

Their involvement reflects the Festival of Song’s mission to elevate community-based choirs onto prestigious platforms and to demonstrate that African ensembles can confidently interpret and reinterpret classical works.

Featured Soloists of the Evening

Adding depth and dramatic colour to the programme are four outstanding soloists, each bringing individual artistry to selected operatic moments:

  • Chiedza Maenzanise – Known for her expressive vocal control and dramatic presence
  • Tarumbidza Kashiri – A powerful interpreter with strong operatic and choral foundations
  • Mei Joichi – Bringing refined musical sensitivity and technical clarity
  • Thulani Zwana – Celebrated for vocal strength and emotive delivery

These soloists will perform selected arias and excerpts from Carmen, weaving together moments of intimacy, tension, and emotional release throughout the evening.

A Valentine’s Experience Beyond the Ordinary

Hosted in the elegant setting of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, the concert is designed as a premium Valentine’s cultural experience. The ambience, music, and storytelling come together to create an evening ideal for couples, classical music enthusiasts, and lovers of the arts.

Guests are encouraged to embrace the spirit of the occasion with elegant or semi-formal attire, enhancing the romantic atmosphere of the night.
